Best practices if you need to file a claim
Auto
- Call the police to file a car accident report
- Get the following information from all parties involved: names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information, VIN, and license plates
- Look for witnesses who would be willing to testify their account of the accident and record their names and phone numbers
Homeowners & Renters
- If you have experienced theft, vandalism, or burglary, report it to the police. Get a police report andthe names of the officers that you speak with
- Take reasonable steps to protect your property from further damage
- Take photos or videos and document all damaged property. Try not to discard any damaged property in case a claims adjuster needs to review it
- Call your insurance company and ask them what is covered and how you will be reimbursed
- Keep records and receipts of any out-of-pocket expenses due to the damage, such as replacing damaged property and additional living expenses
