Does Home Insurance Cover Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Cell Phones?
Your home insurance will cover your cell phone from the following perils:
- Storm damage
- Fire damage
- Accidental toilet drop
Home insurance will not cover your cell phone if:
- You lose/misplace the phone
- You intentionally damage the phone
- The phone dies from old age -- wear and tear
Should you file a claim for a lost or damaged smartphone?
Even if someone steals your smartphone or you accidentally let it go swimming, filing a $1,000 home insurance claim is a bad idea.
Your home insurance deductible is often $500 - $2,500. If you submit an insurance claim for a $1,000 piece of stolen property and you have a $1,000 deductible, you won't get any money from the insurance company, but the claim will still sit on your insurance record for five years.
Don't file a claim unless it is over 2x-3x your deductible. You want to save your policy for big, expensive disasters. Your cellphone has a lot of sentimental value, but far less property value than your house or your roof.
When you file small claims, it can cost more in the long run, with higher insurance premiums in the future. Insurance carriers change pricing based on your claims history and usually charge more if they see small claims on your record.
I hope that helps and sorry for your loss!
